Where To Get Help Using Absorb Plus

If you want help implementing an Elemental Diet using Absorb Plus, or you would like to talk about dietary options other than Absorb Plus to use for your health condition, you can enquire here with me.

What is Absorb Plus?

Absorb Plus is a semi-elemental shake formula designed to give your digestive system a rest.

It contains all vitamins, macro, and micro nutrients that the human body needs in highly absorbable forms so that absorption happens quickly and high up in your digestive tract.

It is semi-elemental, not elemental, because the macronutrients contained in Absorb Plus are not broken down into their simplest parts.

The protein is in the form of whey protein isolate, and the carbohydrates are largely in the form of maltodextrin. Whereas in an elemental formula, the protein and carbohydrates would be in the form of dextrose/glucose and amino acids respectively.

This is, of course deliberate. The carbs being in the form of maltodextrin helps to lessen the blood sugar and insulin spikes that occur when consuming simple sugars, and the protein being in the form of whey protein isolate makes the shake more palatable. (Amino acids taste like sh*t.)

Absorb Plus contains little to no fat as fat is believed to cause digestive upset and be less easily absorbed in people with compromised digestion. Not sure I entirely agree with this, but you do have the option to add flax oil to your shakes to provide you with enough fat to support key bodily processes.

Which Health Conditions Is Absorb Plus Used For?

Absorb Plus is often used with variety of conditions, including but not limited to-

  • Crohn’s disease (Absorb Plus is one of the best meal replacement shakes for Crohn’s disease)
  • Ulcerative colitis (Absorb Plus is one of the best meal replacement shakes for Ulcerative colitis)
  • Diverticulitis
  • SIBO
  • GERD
  • IBS
  • And others.

Absorb Plus is often able to reduce symptoms and allow the body to heal by reducing the amount of matter that reaches deep into the digestive tract. That is to say – it gives your digestive system a rest so that it can repair itself.

It also contains the amino acid glutamine which, in most individuals, supports our gut lining’s ability to repair itself. Note however, that in my experience with my clients, glutamine is well tolerated by around 70% of individuals. In the remaining 30%, I see it being a limiting factor in a client’s healing as it can sometimes cause constipation, gas, and bloating.

Meal replacement shakes for Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, SIBO, and GERD can also help by altering the microbiome. Since the meal replacement shakes are absorbed high up in the digestive tract, they starve our gut bacteria located in the lower parts of the small intestine, and the large intestine.

Numbers of pathogenic bacteria are hence reduced, however we also reduce the number of good bacteria. For this reason, it is often a good idea to supplement with a high quality probiotic whilst consuming Absorb Plus.

How To Take Absorb Plus

There are generally 3 ways in which Absorb Plus is used.

  1. To replace all food intake as a means of providing maximum bowel rest.
  2. To replace a portion of the day’s calories as a means of providing some bowel rest.
  3. To supplement workouts or for extra calories / energy.

If the Absorb Plus shakes are being used as complete meal replacement shakes for Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or another ailment, then a source of healthy fat should be added to the diet. As mentioned on the tub, a good source of healthy fat is cold-pressed, filtered flax oil. Coconut oil can also be used.

If you are wondering how many servings of Absorb Plus you should consume per day, it’s really just a case of consuming Absorb Plus when you’re hungry.

To give you an idea, when I was looking to treat my ulcerative colitis naturally, I consumed 5-6 servings of Absorb Plus daily, each with 1 tbsp of flax oil. I’m 6’0, 185 lbs, and usually need around 3,000 calories to feel satiated. But everyone is different.

Since Absorb Plus is very easy to digest, it’s hard to over eat. So if you feel hungry, make yourself another shake!

The downside of Absorb Plus is it can get very expensive very quickly.

Do I Need To Supplement When Taking Absorb Plus?

Other than the flax oil, many people will choose to add supplements to their routine when consuming Absorb Plus, especially those people who are consuming Absorb Plus as their only source of calories.

This is not essential, since Absorb Plus already contains all the vitamins and other nutrients that the human body needs, however there are some supplements that I commonly recommend for my clients and that I took myself when healing from inflammatory bowel disease.

The specific supplements I recommend to my clients who are following an elemental or semi-elemental diet are-

  • Vitamin D3
  • Quercetin
  • Probiotics (dairy free)

I also commonly recommend bone broth as a means of speeding up gut healing, The bone broth brand that I recommend most often is Bonafide Provisions. It’s available online and from Whole Foods Market in the frozen section.

What Are The Best Flavors Of Absorb Plus?

Well this is a tough one. There are now more flavors of Absorb Plus than there were when I was doing my healing, but I’ve still tried most of them.

The main thing to remember, is that the reason you are consuming Absorb Plus is because you are interested in the digestibility and health benefits of doing so. This isn’t all about the flavor. So even though you may love the sound of ‘Whipped Cream Cookie Dough Bacon’, it’s not going to be the easiest on your belly. I made that flavor up but it sounds good right!?

The flavors that I would stick to, if I was you, would be-

  • Simply Chocolate
  • Simply Vanilla
  • Unsweetened Chocolate
  • Unsweetened Vanilla

They are all very ‘clean’ flavors and are, in my experience with myself and my clients, the least likely to cause digestive upset.

The unsweetened flavors are (obviously) less sweet than the ‘Simply..’ flavors, so you may want to combine a sweetened flavor with an unsweetened flavor – eg. 2 scoops of Simply Chocolate and 2 scoops of Unsweetened Vanilla. Some people, however, don’t need the sweetness and can easily consume the unsweetened variety on it’s own. I wasn’t one of those people.

To test the flavor and also your tolerance to Absorb Plus, I would recommend that you order a sample of each of your chosen flavors prior to buying several tubs.

Buying tip | Ever since I’ve known of Absorb Plus they’ve had a ‘Buy 6 get 1 free’ offer, which as of writing this I can see they still have. This actually saves you quite a lot of money and makes a lot of sense if you’re consuming all of your calories from Absorb Plus.

How Long Do I Need To Take Absorb Plus For?

To answer this question, I will assume that you are taking Absorb Plus as a means of replacing some or even all of your calories from food.

And the short answer is, it depends on your symptoms.

In my experience, I work almost exclusively with clients who are looking to treat ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease naturally, however the following advice is generally applicable across all of the gut ailments listed in the ‘What is Absorb Plus Used For?’ section of this article.

Once your symptoms have gone away, add 1 week before starting to re-introduce foods.

It’s important that you allow adequate healing to take place, and you’d rather go too long than not long enough. After all, following an elemental or semi-elemental diet can be very hard work and you don’t want to come unstuck at the last minute by coming off the diet too soon. You’ll have wasted a lot of time and a lot of money.

I’ve had clients on an almost exclusively Absorb Plus diet (plus flax oil plus bone broth) for as long as 3 months, although this is definitely at the longer end and is unnecessary in most cases.

Listen to your body, do your healing, then gradually start to reintroduce foods.

When you do decide to reintroduce foods, make sure that they are whole foods, easy to digest, devoid of common triggers like dairy and gluten (although almost all whole foods should be anyway), and do it slowly.

Don’t go from a liquid diet to a whole foods diet in one day. I commonly replacing one Absorb Plus shake per day for the first 3 days, then replace another for the next 3 days, and so on.

You may choose to continue with the supplements listed earlier after you have stopped consuming Absorb Plus. I haven’t come across anything negative in my experience or in my research that these supplements are detrimental to our health if taken for long periods.
